I grew up in San Diego, so Disneyland has always been my second home. With my birthday in September, Halloween time at Disneyland holds a special place in my heart.

I am currently a Magic Key Holder and Disney mom of 2 princesses. My husband and I take our girls to the parks as often as we can and share Disney tips with other families through the blog and our Instagram.

Here is an overview of Halloween at Disneyland and Disneyland’s California Adventure, starting with a fan favorite: the Disneyland Oogie Boogie Bash.

A Disneyland Halloween Party with Mickey Mouse? Yes, please!

On select nights throughout September and October, you can upgrade your Disneyland ticket to include admission to the Oogie Boogie Bash celebrated at California Adventure.

If you don’t have a Disneyland ticket for either park that day, you can still purchase just the Oogie Boogie Bash party ticket alone and enter California Adventure only once the after-hours event begins admission.

2024 Oogie Boogie Bash Dates, Hours, & Tickets

Dates for Disney Oogie Boogie are on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Sometimes there is a special occurrence on the Saturday before Halloween, but 2024 does NOT have any Saturday dates.

2024 Ticket Prices for this after-hours Disneyland Halloween party range from $134-$189 (the same as in 2023).

For comparison, The Oogie Boogie Bash 2022 ticket price ranged from $129 to $179 per person.

You do not need a ticket to Disneyland or California Adventure to get into the Oogie Boogie Bash Halloween Party.

This separately ticketed event includes entry into California Adventure starting at 3 pm. The Disneyland Oogie Boogie Bash hours go from 6 pm to 11 pm, and all regular guests are escorted out of California Adventure by 6 pm.

Tickets for Oogie Boogie Bash need to be purchased directly from Disney’s website. Just go to “buy tickets” and select the after-hours Oogie Boogie event.

This year (2024) is the first year Halloween time has started in August at Disneyland Resort. Over in Walt Disney World, Halloween time begins in early August every year (mainly due to hurricane season).

A lot of people complain about decorations going up earlier and earlier, but I think it’s smart since Disney World has already been celebrating for a month before we start getting out the pumpkins.

But I’m also a little biased because I love Halloween and seeing Disney all decked out for the spooky holiday in time for my early September birthday (Sorry, not sorry!).

Many guests opt for a pool day or Disney character meal on the morning of their Oogie Boogie Bash tickets during a multi-day vacation.

My mom and I literally just went for Oogie Boogie Bash, stayed at the Paradise Pier Hotel (soon to be Pixar Place Hotel) for one night, then headed back home the next morning.

We walked around Downtown Disney before the Disney Halloween Party.

It was such a fun start to the day and gave us time to explore and complete Pluto’s Pumpkin Pursuit.

Pro Tip: Stay at the Grand Californian or Paradise Pier Hotel so you can use the hotel-specific entrance to Disney California Adventure Park. This way you avoid the lines at the main entrance to California Adventure.

Side Note: on Paradise Pier Hotel: The entrance to California Adventure closes when they start to close down Oogie Boogie Bash, so you will need to return to your hotel through the main entrance or through the entrance to the Grand Californian Hotel.

On the D23 Oogie Boogie Bash Members Night, they gave out a D23 Oogie Boogie poster, but only at the entrance to the park- not at the entrance back to the hotel.

Disneyland Tickets for Halloween

If you’re looking for Disneyland Halloween party tickets or just tickets to Disneyland Halloween time at the parks, there are 2 different options.

Oogie Boogie Bash Disneyland Tickets are only sold through Disneyland. I personally would not trust any Oogie Boogie Bash tickets resale option.

The parks outside the special event still have a lot of Halloween Magic. From decorations and ride overlays to food, merch, and character meetings, Disneyland and California Adventure go all out for Halloween.

If you want tickets for the theme park before your Oogie Boogie party starts, then you can save some money and buy them through a third-party vendor.

Just make sure the vendor is certified to sell Disneyland tickets.

Many Good Neighbor hotels will sell tickets in a discounted vacation package, or you can go directly through a trusted travel agency.

We use (and are affiliated with) Get Away Today for tickets and hotel packages for Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

Their customer service is outstanding, they have layaway options, and they can price match. Although once you add up taxes and fees, they probably have the better deal already. All of Get Away Today’s price quotes include taxes and fees already.

Check out the vacation packages through Get Away Today and use our code FTF10 for $10 off a vacation package.

*Side Note: Get Away Today also sells travel to other destinations including cruises. Check out our info on what Get Away Today has to offer.

Oogie Boogie Bash Costume Rules

Usually, guests under the age of 14 can not wear costumes to Disneyland. You can Disneybound, wear regular clothes resembling characters, for things like Dapper Day, or help celebrate Disney, but there are no costumes allowed.

The exception is the special after-hours events.

Requirements for Oogie Boogie Bash costumes include not posing for pictures or autographs. They don’t want the other guests to have any issues and end up blaming Disney for a non-cast member experience.

Disney Halloween Party Costume Rules

  • Nothing floor length
  • No sharp objects or weapons
  • Must be family-friendly and non-offensive
  • Each Halloween costume is subject to security searches
  • No posing for pictures or autographs for other guests

Oogie Boogie Bash Events & Activities

Treat Trails

Immersive Treat Trails are scattered throughout California Adventure.

As you enter the park for the event, you’ll be given a map with a list of where the Treat Trails are located. It’s called a Treat Trail because each location has 3-5 candy bins where cast members pass out candy.

Each of these Trails also has a villain you can briefly interact with. A selfie or quick photo is ok, but this is not a meet-and-greet opportunity. It’s still absolutely amazing as the Disney character talks with you as you slowly walk by.

They are completely in character and have amazing dialogue.

Side Note: In 2022 it was raining on and off during Oogie Boogie Bash. The characters were NOT out if it was raining, but the treat trails were open.

My mom almost missed meeting Mother Gothel (her favorite!) because of this, but the rain let up right before the parade so we got to see her after all that year.

  • [No Villain Treat Trail] (Buena Vista Street)

Maleficent and Angela were my favorites. They were completely in character as they directly spoke with the guests. Other Disney villains were great with some level of direct interaction, but the main part of their spiel was a general dialogue.

For me, the Treat Trails were the highlight of the Disneyland Oogie Boogie Bash. You get tons of candy and don’t have to wait in long lines to see the villains.

I am so excited Hades is getting his own treat trail for 2024! You can usually only see him in the Oogie Boogie Bash Halloween Parade. Hercules is one of my favorites (what can I say, I’m a 90’s girl).

If a treat trail does have a long line (like Cruella), then try that spot again later and it should have cleared up a bit.

For 2023, Oogie Boogie and Ernesto de la Cruz were the longest treat trail lines (like over an hour wait!). We skipped over those treat trails, but checked back during the second parade- no line!

Somehow we caught Oogie Boogie right before he went on break, and then we had a great chat with Ernesto de la Cruz about the gravediggers in the parade as they went by.

I missed Maleficent and Dr. Facilier for 2023, but Judge Doom did a great job! He got my 4-year-old promising to bring him a rabbit, she had no idea what she was agreeing to! haha! Just goes to show even if you haven’t seen the movie (in this case Rodger Rabbit), you can still enjoy the theatrics.

Yokai looked impressive, but that was the only villain treat trail we didn’t make it to. He also had a very long line.

Oogie Boogie Bash Characters & PhotoPass

There are also characters with Photo Opportunities throughout Disneyland Resort’s Oogie Boogie Bash. Some of these Photo Ops have PhotoPass included while others you need to use your camera.

Don’t forget, MagicBand+ helps makes scanning your tickets, photos, and Lightning Lanes much faster if you go to the park at least once a year or more!

  • Lotso (Toy Story Mania)
  • Characters from Up, Incredibles, & other Pixar Pals (Pixar Pier)
  • Kingdom Hearts Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy (Paradise Garden Park)
  • Multiple Disney Character Villains like the Evil Queen as the Old Hag from Snow White, Smee, Prince Hans, Prince John & Sheriff of Nottingham, Queen of Hearts, etc. (Carthay Circle fountain)
  • Minnie, Daisy, and Clarabelle as the Sanderson Sisters from Hocus Pocus (Hollywood Land)
  • Multiple Avengers (Avengers Campus)
  • Residents of Cars Land (Cozy Cone)

  • Disney Duos (Carthay Circle fountain)
  • Minnie, Daisy, and Clarabelle as the Sanderson Sisters (Hollywood Land)
  • Heroic Encounters (Avengers Campus)
  • Residents of Cars Land (Cozy Cone)
  • Sinister Step & Repeat (Grizzly River Trail Water Wheel)
  • Pixar Pals (near Poultry Palace)
  • Swashbuckling Sidekicks & Classic Animated Friends (Pacific Wharf)
  • Incredibles (near Incredicoaster)

In 2022, Disney Duos included Mulan, and the Blue Fairy. They did a character switch while we were waiting in line so we met Merlin and Hercules.

The 2023 Disney Duos in Carthay Cirlcle were a variety of Disney villains like Prince Hans, Smee, and the Evil Queen as the old hag in Snow White. She loved our girls’ witch dresses!

Heroic encounters for Oogie Boogie Bash in 2022 include a special view of Zombie Cap (Captain America as a Zombie version of himself). No Zombie Cap in 2023, but still Captain America and other Avengers are at meet & greet stations or roaming around Avengers Campus.

The Cars characters in Cars Land are decked out in their Halloween costumes for the full Halloween Time at Disneyland Resort and not just for Oogie Boogie Bash.

During the second parade was a perfect time for riding Radiator Springs Racers and getting PhotoPass photos with the Cars characters. Or take advantage of shorter lines for the Treat Trails!

There are also fun photo-op backdrops spread throughout the park, so be sure to snap a pic as you go by them! Again there may or may not be a PhotoPass cast member taking pictures, it depends on the location and their schedule. They seemed to rotate where they were at any given time.

Haunted Mansion ballroom ghosts dancing in Mickey's Frightfully Fun Halloween Parade

Frightfully Fun Parade

Mickey’s Frightfully Fun Parade is the best parade in the history of Disneyland Resort. Well, that might be a bit of a stretch since all of their parades are so amazing. Let’s call it the most unique parade.

It starts off with the Headless Horseman riding his horse down the parade route. Very spooky and cool and set the scene for Halloween fun.

Mickey and Minnie star in the first float with an upbeat Halloween song they are dancing and singing along to.

The Nightmare Before Christmas Float comes next followed by my favorite, the Haunted Mansion Float. This is preceded by ghostly dancers and followed by grave diggers scraping their shovels to a spooky choreography.

A splash of color comes next with Dr. Facilier singing and dancing, working his voodoo magic.

As a grand finale, we have quite the gathering of Disney villains. Ursula, Jafar, the Red Queen, Claude Frollo, Lady Tremaine & the Ugly Stepsisters, and the Sherrif of Nottingham all dance on foot (or tentacles) down the Frightfully Fun Parade path.

The Disney villain float carries Cruella Devil and Hades in the front with the Evil Queen and her bubbling cauldron in the middle. Maleficent is represented by her dragon form decorating the float and the last character we see is none other than the smiling Chesire Cat.

Oogie Boogie Bash Dessert Party

The best way to watch the Frightfully Fun Parade is to do the Oogie Boogie Bash Dessert Party. It’s not necessary to get a decent view of the parade, but it definitely paid off to sit in a chair during the parade.

In 2023 we skipped the dessert party and got a decent view of the parade but it wasn’t nearly as relaxing of an experience looking over people’s heads (we were only 1 row back- I wasn’t about to waste Treat Trail time on snagging a parade spot 40 minutes early!).

The desserts and beverages were delicious, and we felt truly like VIPs. It was nice not having to worry about getting to the parade route early to snag a front-row spot. They even had to go boxes if you didn’t finish your whole dessert platter.

Check-in to the dessert party outside Wine Country Trattoria.

The line for checking in can get long, so if you want one of the first table options then line up 30-45 minutes early.

We lined up about 20 minutes early and had to wait a while to be seated, but our table was around the corner in front of the Pixar Pal-A-Round backdrop. There was still plenty of time to get our drinks and desserts before the parade started.

Pro Tip: Many people say to go to the less crowded second parade, but if you have younger kids, they won't be awake enough to enjoy it. Just find a spot 20-30 minutes early, and you'll be fine.

We lined up for the first parade 15 minutes early across from The Little Mermaid at the top of the stairs and had a decent second-row view over a family sitting on their blanket.

Oogie Boogie Bash Dessert Party Menu

  • Red Velvet Bundt Cake
  • Orange Dreamsicle Rice Crispy
  • Triple Chocolate Mousse Cake
  • Dark Chocolate Fudge Pop
  • Raspberry Mini Struessel
  • Gummy Worms
  • Water
  • Coffee & Tea
  • Soft Drinks
  • Beer & Selection of Wines
  • Poet’s Potion (Rum)
  • Jolly Red Mocktail (Fruit Punch)

There are only 4 people per table, so larger groups will need to be a bit more spread out, but you’re mostly focusing on the parade anyway.

In my opinion, the Disneyland Oogie Boogie Bash Dessert Party is absolutely worth it if you have it in the budget. I would 100% do the dessert party for Mickey’s Frightfully Fun parade again.

If you’re thinking about surprising someone, it makes a great Disneyland gift.

Pro Tip: Ask for a beverage refill (or two!) right before the parade starts. The servers don’t come around during the Oogie Boogie Bash Parade.
Pictures of villains on wall outside Villains Grove

Villains Grove

Opening at dusk, the Villains Grove at Redwood Creek Challenge Trail does not actually have villains, but it is an eerily awesome display of Halloween lights, fog, and creepy decorations.

In 2023, we found ourselves by Villains Grove around 9:50. The line went by the Grand Californian Hotel entrance, and took us less than 10 minutes to enter.

Each of the sections in Villains Grove is themed after a different Disney story, highlighting the sounds and signs of the villains.

Our 4-year-old was asleep in my arms (no strollers are allowed in Villains Grove), but our 7-year-old was still awake and enjoyed the lights and music.

It was so well done, and a must see if you love Halloween decorations. They have the lights, fog, and decor done so well you forget where you are for a moment. Super creepy Halloween vibe without being too scary.

Villains Grove Themes:

  • Hunchback of Notre Dame
  • Sleeping Beauty
  • Alice in Wonderland
  • The Lion King
  • The Princess and the Frog
  • Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs
  • Brave
  • Finale

The common “Pro-Tip” is to go to Villain’s Grove at the end of the night.

Unfortunately, the night we went to Disneyland Oogie Boogie Bash in 2022, everyone seemed to know that Disney tip.

The line was 45 minutes long when there were only 15 minutes left until closing and the end of the party.

It was definitely NOT a successful Pro-Tip; however, we were there on the D23 Members Night. My personal opinion is that the guests in this Oogie Boogie Bash attendance were all super fans tuned into all the tips and tricks.

Many D23 members also went on the Tuesday after the D23 conference. If you are going to the Disneyland Oogie Boogie Bash that coincides with the D23 conference, just know that some special tips you might have heard may not apply (since everyone else probably also knows them). It’s like with Genie Plus, if everyone uses it, then the lines even for Genie Plus are long.

We opted to go through 3 more Treat Trails and ride Midway Mania to close out our Oogie Boogie Bash night, but the next opportunity we get we will go to Villains Trail first.

Tips for When to Visit Villains Grove

  • Right at dusk when it first opens for the night
  • Directly after either of the 2 parades (sit on the side of the parade route closest to Villains Grove)
  • During the Frightfully Fun Parade (the first parade is the more popular one)
  • 15-30 minutes before Oogie Boogie Bash closes (potentially still a long line)
  • The line usually moves quickly, so don’t stress too much

Pick a time that will work best for your Oogie Boogie Bash preferences, and decide if it’s a “must do” or “would be nice” item on your list.

*Keep in mind the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail will close early for them to change it into Villains Grove for Oogie Boogie nights.

Mickey’s Trick & Treat Show, & Extras

Mickey’s Trick & Treat Show is a fun live theater show with songs, dancing, lights, and bubbles. Mickey and his friends interact with the guests as everyone joins in some great Halloween storytime fun.

It was similar to the Disney Junior Dance Party they normally have on that stage, but more of a Halloween story-telling with Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse. There are fun songs they sing, and candy the cast members hand to you on the way out after the show.

Our girls’ absolutely loved it! Definitely top on the list for Oogie Boogie with little ones.

Another fun extra for Oogie Boogie Bash is the light show projected onto the Carthay Circle building. It goes off periodically through the night and is very impressive. It’s full of lasers and spiders crawling, bricks crumbling, and dancing skeletons.

There are also some Halloween Disney food items specific for only Oogie Boogie Bash attendees.

Oogie Boogie Bash Halloween Food

  • Mistress of Evil Chocolate Cake (Wine Country Trattoria)
  • Panic (Raspberry) Churros
  • Loaded Buffalo Chicken Fries (Flo’s V8 Cafe) [2022]
  • Wine Country Trattoria Oogie Boogie Bash Dining Package with Parade Viewing
  • Oogie Boogie Bash Dessert Party with Parade Viewing

The regular Disneyland Halloween Time food is also available during Oogie Boogie’s Party, but there are so many good options it is hard to try them all.

I recommend to go for more than one day and share all of the Halloween Treats so it’s easier to try more of them.

In 2022, my mom and I only managed to get through 3 of the 8 Disneyland Halloween Time treats in the one afternoon we were there- and that was just for California Adventure’s menus! Of course, we had the Desert Party which filled us up on sugar.

We went Saturday through Monday in 2023 with Oogie Boogie Bash being on the Sunday we were there. This let us try multiple treats in both parks and the Goofy’s Kitchen Halloween Character Dining.

Pro Tip: Eat a good lunch before Oogie Boogie Bash so you are not worried about taking time away from the Halloween fun to sit down for dinner.

What is the Disneyland Oogie Boogie Bash?

Disneyland Oogie Boogie Bash is an after-hours additional tickets event held in Disneyland Resort’s California Adventure Park.

The Halloween Boogie Bash party event goes from 6 pm -11 pm, but you can enter Disney California Adventure Park as early as 3 pm.

No reservation or park ticket is needed as long as you purchased the Oogie Boogie Bash ticket. Kids under 3 years old get in for free. For kids over the age of 3, there is no difference in pricing.

D23 Members Night for Oogie Boogie Bash

In 2022, there was a D23 Members Night that went on sale Tuesday, June 28 (6/28/22), which was also when Magic Key holders could begin to purchase their party tickets for any of the Disneyland Boogie Bash nights.

It was one of 2 Saturday night offerings for the Disneyland Oogie Boogie Bash, which is typically on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.

This advanced ticket purchase along with some D23 member special surprises (such as a commemorative poster) and enjoying the D23 community like never before were just a few reasons to enjoy this exclusive member night.

Keep in mind that this was going on during the D23 convention at the Anaheim Convention Center, so although Oogie Boogie Bash offered a limited-capacity experience within Disney California Adventure, there were a lot of people.

I’m hoping the D23 convention will be in September again so we can have another Saturday D23 members’ night for Oogie Boogie Bash!

Oogie Boogie Bash Summary

So is Oogie Boogie Bash worth the extra price?

Absolutely.

With 3 adults and 2 kids in 2023 we managed to do: 10 out of 12 Treat Trails, 4 out of 8 Character Photo Ops (and saw the characters for the others as we passed by their lines), Mickey’s Trick or Treat Dance Party, Frightfully Fun Parade, and Villain’s Grove all between 6 pm and 10:50 pm.

Tips for Oogie Boogie Bash

  • Pick only 2-3 rides you want to go on
  • Prioritize treat Trails OR photo ops
  • Get the Dessert Party for the Halloween Parade
  • Eat a large lunch before 3 pm and forget about dinner
  • Stay at the Grand Californian Hotel or Paradise Pier Hotel and use the Hotel entrance to California Adventure
  • Bring a larger bag to hold your Treat Trail candy or bring a backpack for the overflow
  • Visit Villains Grove early if you don’t want to miss it
  • Visit long line Treat Trails during the second parade

If you want a Halloween experience filled with Disney villains, trick-or-treating, and Halloween fun then Oogie Boogie Bash at Disneyland Resort is a must.

Don’t worry, you’ll still get to see Mickey and Friends in their Halloween costumes and soak in the Halloween atmosphere and decorations if you go to Disneyland at Halloween Time without adding on Oogie Boogie’s Party.

Oogie Boogie Bash just levels up the amount of interactive Halloween fun.

If you are NOT planning on attending Oogie Boogie Bash, but still want to go to Disneyland Resort during Halloween Time, then pay attention to the dates.

California Adventure will get more crowded at 3 pm when the Oogie Boogie party guests are allowed into the theme park. Plus, regular guests who don’t have Oogie Boogie Bash tickets will have to leave California Adventure Park by 6 pm.

Either get a Park Hopper ticket so you can head over to Disneyland Park, just go to Disneyland that day, or use that day as a Downtown Disney/Hotel/Pool day.

For those attending Oogie Boogie Bash, I highly recommend staying on property at the Grand Californian Hotel or Paradise Pier Hotel. This way you have your own entrance to California Adventure and can skip the crowds at the regular Disney park entrance.

For a more budget-friendly hotel within walking distance, try the comfortable Grand Legacy Hotel right across the street.

Happy hauntings!
